April 30, 2010– H-E-B Food Stores and the City of Port Isabel along with the Driftwood Garden Club, the City’s Beautification Committee and Public Works Department will be partnering in celebrating Arbor Day on Friday April 30 at 4:00 p.m. on the grounds of the Laguna Madre Park on Port Rd.
Trees will be donated by the Driftwood Garden Club and the City’s Beautification Committee. Plantings will be done symbolically by the youth of the community with the help of the City’s Public Works Department. Colleen Catlett, master gardener and member of the City’s Beautification Committee will be demonstrating the proper method of planting a tree. H-E-B will be providing refreshments and reusable shopping bags.

H-E-B Food Stores and the City of Port Isabel Partner to Celebrate Earth Day
Port Isabel, Texas. H-E-B Food Stores and the City of Port Isabel will be partnering in celebrating Earth Day on Thursday April 22 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the HEB Food Store in Port Isabel.
On Earth Day, H-E-B invites customers to bring five plastic shopping bags to the nearest H-E-B to recycle in one of its plastic bag recycling bins. Every customer that brings in five plastic bags (from any retailer) will be given a coupon for a free promotional bag, limit one per customer while supplies last. There will be refreshments, music and hands on activities for the kids by Girl Scout Troop 377. Port Isabel city officials will be on hand to welcome people and giving out information about recycling.

H.E.B. presented a check to the City of Port Isabel on Monday, as a continued investment in the quality of life in the Laguna Madre area. The funds were accepted by Mayor Joe E. Vega who stated that the $35,000 would be used as seed money to increase funding for improvements for Washington Park and Laguna Madre Park. On hand with Mayor Joe E. Vega to accept the check from Virginia Perez, H.E.B. representative, were City Commissioner Memo Torres, Port Isabel City Manager Edward Meza and Park Advisers Mark Guillot and Raul Loera. Store Director Bea Lopez, Virginia Lopez and Mayor Joe E. Vega all stressed the importance of this partnership in furthering the efforts to make Port Isabel and the Laguna Madre a better place to live, work and play.
