A decade later, members of the communities bridged by the Queen Isabella are planning a memorial ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m., September 15th. Residents of Port Isabel and South Padre Island have formed a committee which has created a program that will be held on the South Padre Island side of the bridge at the Queen Isabella Causeway Collapse Memorial.
The Port Isabel South Padre Press is working on a reprint of the Special Edition printed on the afternoon of the collapse. Ray Quiroga, Press Publisher, reported that staff will be conducting interviews to add to the original content.
Speakers scheduled for the Thursday memorial ceremony will include residents from both communities, first responders, elected officials, members of the business community and others involved in the aftermath of the collapse and the bridge reconstruction.
In addition to remembering those lost in the collapse and those rescued in those pre-dawn hours, this committee also wants to celebrate the togetherness that our communities still enjoy, the result of realizing that we are more than just neighbors, we are friends.
