City of Port Isabel to Offer Shelter during Cold Spell

The National Weather Service is forecasting very cold temperatures across Cameron County on Wednesday night & Thursday night with temperatures falling into the mid to upper 30s.

The City of Port Isabel is offering shelter at the Port Isabel Judge Eliseo “Cheo” B. Vega (Courtroom) 110 Hickman St. starting on Wednesday, December 7, & Thursday, December 8, at 6 p.m. for those needing a warm place to stay.

Those who will partake in this offer will need to bring the following:

~Blankets, pillows, sleeping bags.

~Food -Non perishable food including cold cuts, chips, can goods. Non-microwaveable.

~Identification

~Personal medication

~No pets except for service animals

Tropical Storm Don is moving quickly through the Laguna Madre area. According to the National Weather Service, Don is expected to bring with it 2 to 4″ of rain in most locations for 3 to 4 hours. Some gusty winds to 50 m.p.h. are possible with 20 to 25 m.p.h. sustained winds and some lightening is expected. “Please use caution”, Mayor Joe E. Vega comments, “if you should have to be out and about during this weather event.”

The Museums of Port Isabel has rescheduled tonight’s Lighthouse Establishment Cinema’s IRON MAN 2 movie for Saturday, July 30 at 9:30 p.m. Bring your family and your lawn chairs for a great evening of free movie entertainment at the Port Isabel Lighthouse. Barry Goldsmith, National Weather Service Brownsville added, “the weather we are expecting on Saturday is very much like an April forecast, lots of sunshine for a great day at the beach.” Officials do caution, though, that rip tides are to follow TS Don. As Tropical Storm Don approaches south Texas, Port Isabel Mayor Joe E. Vega “reminds the community to secure properties and finalize preparations. Any loose items on your property such as lawn furniture, trash cans, and household items should be secured as well. Power outages are a possibility and should be prepared for.” Based on the current forecast Tropical Storm Don could bring torrential rains and wind gusts from to 40-50 mph with downpours starting at about 2:00 p.m. and bringing with it from 3 to 5 inches of rain, with a possibly up to 7 inches. The rain is expected to dissipate between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. “We want to remind our residents and visitors that it is hurricane season and we need to remain vigilant,” adds Mayor Joe E. Vega.

The City of Port Isabel will keep you updated on the progress of Tropical Storm Don, sandbag distribution and other information related to the storm.

Hurricane Stickers are available at the Port Isabel City Hall (305 E. Maxan St.) in the Finance Department during business hours or at the Port Isabel Police Department (110 Hickman St.) until 5:00 p.m. If you picked up a Hurricane Sticker within the last two years, you do not need to renew. City Hall closes noon Thursday, Reopens Monday 8am due to cold weather

COLD WEATHER ANNOUNCEMENT:

Port Isabel Mayor Joe E. Vega and the City Commissioners announce that the Port Isabel City Hall will close at noon on Thursday, February 3 and reopen at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, February 7.

Additionally, the Treasures of the Gulf Museum, the Port Isabel Historic Museum and the Port Isabel Lighthouse are closed today, Thursday, February 3, and will reopen on Friday, February 4. The Lighthouse will reopen at 9 a.m. and the Museums will reopen at 10 a.m. Check back for updates will be posted here.

The City of Port Isabel is offering shelter at:
The Port Isabel Police Department (Court room), 110 W. Hickman. St., starting on Tuesday, February 1 at 8 p.m., through Saturday afternoon or when the temperature changes for those needing a warm place to stay.

Those who will partake in this offer will need to bring the following:
- Blankets, pillows, sleeping bags.
- Food -Non perishable food including cold cuts, chips, can goods. Non-microwaveable.
- Identification.
- Personal medication.
- No pets except for service animals.

Tropical Storm Hermine Advisory 5 pm

The City of Port Isabel is still keeping an eye out for the rain and wind that TS Hermine promises to bring with it. As the core of the storm passes over eastern Cameron County, with gusts of up to 60 m.p.h. and heavy rain during the hours of 10:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m., caution should be exercised. Sustained winds of around 35 m.p.h. and six inches of rain is expected locally. Port Isabel Public Works Department will be monitoring drains and making sure all roadways off Highway 100 in Port Isabel are cleared.

Port Isabel Mayor Joe E. Vega asks that “residents and visitors to Port Isabel take the proper precautions that this type of tropical activity calls for. Items that may blow around in high winds should be secured. No relocation will be called for. The Port Isabel City Hall will be open tomorrow during normal business hours from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.”

City of Port Isabel Hurricane Alex Update

As Hurricane Alex made landfall as a Category 1 this evening, the City of Port Isabel is grateful that our community escaped the damage that a stronger Alex could have caused.

Port Isabel City Hall will remain closed tomorrow and reopen at 8:00 a.m. Friday morning.

The Emergency Shelter at the Port Isabel Community Center will close at noon on Thursday.

EOC will stand down at noon on Thursday.

The Museums of Port Isabel will reopen on Friday at 10:00 a.m. and the Port Isabel Lighthouse will open at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, weather permitting.

The Lighthouse Establishment Cinema movie scheduled for this Friday has been rescheduled for Friday, July 9th at 9:30 p.m. after South Padre Island’s Fireworks over the Laguna Madre.

Port Isabel will be open for July 4th weekend and invites visitors to come and enjoy our amenities, shopping, restaurants, fishing or just relaxing at the coast!
