Animal Shelter Adoption Update 7/12

Bailey gets a new home!

Because of all the hard work of the City of Port Isabel’s Animal Shelter Staff, Animal Shelter Volunteers, the Friends of the Isabel Y. Garcia Animal Shelter, the Laguna Madre Humane Society, the City of Port Isabel’s Animal Shelter Advisory Committee, Valley Morning Star, Channel 5 News, News Reporter Manuel De La Rosa, and citizens of both the City of Port Isabel and South Padre Island, the Shelter is near reaching its goal of decreasing the animal population.

Over the weekend, Monday and today, people from as far as McAllen, Harlingen, Brownsville and the communities of the Laguna Madre area, have come to adopt, foster and rescue animals. As of today, the dog population has decreased from 110 to 73 and the cat population from 80 to 43. We expect that number to decrease even more by the end of this week.

The City of Port Isabel waived the fee of the adoptions and paid for the vaccinations. Both the Friends of the Isabel Y. Garcia Animal Shelter and the Laguna Madre Humane Society paid for the Spay and Neuter and continue to promote foster care and rescue. This gave the public a chance to adopt the animals at no charge.

The City of Port Isabel Staff continues to update the facility to meet requirements of the state by replacing all wood with vinyl in the cat rooms, ICO room, etc., reducing the cages in the facility and cleaning the brush around the fence adding caliche around the fence to protect the animals from fleas and ticks. The A/C system of the main office and kennels are also being updated.

We are very pleased with this outcome and progress.

Thank you,
Edward P. Meza, City Manager
City of Port Isabel

TxDot Awards Grant to Port Isabel Police Department

Port Isabel Police Department received a grant in the amount of approximately 51,460.27 dollars from the Texas Department of Transportation. The grant funds will be utilized for Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) from October 1, 2010 to September 31, 2011 in effort to promote safe driving with education and enforcement efforts. The goal is to save lives and reduce injuries.

Port Isabel Police will have officers on regular and overtime status looking for drivers that are drinking alcohol and/or intoxicated while operating motor vehicles. Officers will enforce traffic laws such as running red lights, seatbelt laws and speeding.

Do not consume an alcoholic beverage and drive a motor vehicle. Remember it is not worth ruining your life and/or another persons life by drinking and driving.

The intent is to have drivers and passengers wear their safety belts. Children should be in their safety seats, it’s the law. Safety advocates report that drivers and passengers who buckle up have a 50 percent better chance of surviving traffic collision and avoiding serious injuries.

Slow down, allow yourself extra time to arrive at your destination. Don’t Speed.

Stop for a Red Light. Intersection crashes increase the potential for serious injury or death.
