Cities of Port Isabel & South Padre Island join to honor those lost in the QIC Collapse

On the 10th Anniversary of the Collapse of the Queen Isabella Causeway, communities came together to remember the events in the early morning hours of Saturday, September 15th, 2001. A steel laden barge hit a piling causing two-80 ft. sections to fall into the dark waters of the Laguna Madre Bay some 80 ft. below. Eight lives were lost and three survivors rescued from the waters. [album:] Bridge collapse victims honored were: Robert "Bob" Harris, Hector Martinez Jr., Harpoon Barry Welch and Chelsea Welch, all of Port Isabel; Julio Mireles of Los Fresnos; Robin Leavell of Mercedes; Stvan Francisco Rivas of Humble, Texas; and Gaspar S. Hinojosa of Kingsville. Survivors: Rene Mata of Port Isabel and Gustavo Morales and Bridgett Goza of Brownsville. Speakers included elected officials and members of the community offered a variety of viewpoints of the events of 9/11 and the days following.
