City of Port Isabel opens Emergency Shelter

The City of Port Isabel has opened an Emergency Shelter as of 12 noon, Wednesday for those seeking shelter during Hurricane Alex. The shelter is located at the Port Isabel Community Center (213 Yturria St.). Please bring blankets, pillows, medication you may require, food and water or any other supplies you need during your stay. The emergency shelter will remain open until no longer necessary.

For transportation to the shelter, please call the Port Isabel Police Department at 956/943-2727. Mayor Joe E. Vega, “encourages residents to remain indoors and limit travel unless absolutely necessary until Hurricane Alex weather has subsided. The City of Port Isabel EOC team is still keeping a watchful eye on Alex progress and wants everybody to remain safe.”

As Hurricane Alex approaches landfall, its maximum sustained winds are 80 m.p.h. and it is producing a great deal of rain. With 6 – 12 inches expected, inland flooding is a concern. Hurricane Alex is expected to make landfall at midnight tonight. Please exercise caution.

The Port Isabel City Hall is closed today and will reopen Friday at 8:00 a.m.
