Hurricane Alex 5 p.m. Update

Hurricane Alex is on course to make landfall at between 9:00 p.m. and  midnight tonight approximately 80 – 100 miles south of the Rio Grande River. Tropical storm winds likely in eastern Cameron County (50 – 55 m.p.h.). At this time, hurricane force winds are not expected. An additional 6 – 12 inches of rainfall is expected, so please exercise caution. Remain indoors if possible.

No widespread power outages reported in Cameron County.

The Queen Isabella Causeway is closed as per TxDoT. It will remain closed until the storm passes.

City of Port Isabel  Emergency Shelter:  The shelter is located at the Port Isabel Community Center (213 Yturria St.). Please bring blankets, pillows, medication you may require, food and water or any other supplies you need during your stay. The emergency shelter will remain open until no longer necessary.

For transportation to the shelter, please call the Port Isabel Police Department at 956/943-2727. Mayor Joe E. Vega “encourages residents to remain indoors and limit travel unless absolutely necessary until Hurricane Alex’s weather has subsided. The City of Port Isabel’s EOC team is still keeping a watchful eye on Alex’s progress and wants everybody to remain safe.”

The Port Isabel City Hall is closed today and will reopen Friday at 8:00 a.m.
