BACKGROUND: The LHEC is a unique program which utilizes the historic Port Isabel Lighthouse as the backdrop for the projections of movies. Since 2004, during the summer months, family friendly movies are projected onto the side of the lighthouse. The public is invited to bring their lawn chairs, blankets and picnics for a memorable evening under the stars. Mentioned in Texas Monthlyas one of three reasons to get in your car and GO!We invite you to get in your car and go to the Port Isabel Lighthouse and grab a memory of your own! Admission: Free. Public invited. Pets allowed, but must be kept on a leash and mindful of their well trained owners who are prepared to clean up after them. Concessions offered. No alcohol allowed.

MAY 19: Join the Isabel Y. Garcia Animal Shelter for its 6th Annual Ay Chihuahua Fundraiser, scheduled to be held on May 19, 2017 at the beautiful Port Isabel Event & Cultural Center! Every year the shelter uses this fundraiser to help raise funds for a project to help make life a little brighter for the homeless pets we care for until they find their forever home. Our event features a delicious Mexican buffet, specialty margaritas, beer, wine, music, live and silent auction, and last but not least the announcement of the Whiskey Barrel Raffle Winner! This is definitely a fiesta you don't want to miss! Tickets will be available for purchase at the shelter, Port Isabel Event & Cultural Center and online at http://bit.ly/2017animals! Register before May 23rd & take advantage of our early bird registration fees: $25-5k walk, $30- 10k run, $15 for students & military with ID. Both courses start at Schlitterbahn on South Padre Island, cross the historic Queen Isabella Causeway and end in Port Isabel. Every participant to cross the finish line will receive a medal. T-Shirts are guaranteed to the first 1,000 participants to check in.

Lighthouse Undergoes Renovation

PORT ISABEL LIGHTHOUSE UNDERGOES RENOVATION

Starting on Monday, October 31, the historic Port Isabel lighthouse will be undergoing renovations by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department. The project includes maintenance and restoration inside and outside the 1853 structure. Weather permitting

The Lighthouse Keepers Cottage, which houses the Visitors Center and the Port Isabel Chamber of Commerce, will remain open. Visitors may take advantage of the Lighthouse artifacts on display in the Keepers Cottage, browse the information displays or buy tickets to the Treasures of the Gulf Museum and the Port Isabel Historical Museum., TPWD anticipates the project will be completed by February 23, 2017, during which time the lighthouse will be closed.

DAY OF THE DEAD CELEBRATION ~ DIA DE LOS MUERTOS

The Museums of Port Isabel, in collaboration with the City of Port Isabel, the Laguna Madre Museum Foundation, the Port Isabel Economic Development Corporation, the Laguna Madre Art League, present their Annual Day of the Dead festival – “Los Colores Del  Muerto” on Saturday, October 29, 2016 from 4 to 11 p.m. in Washington Park (new location, 156 W. Madison St.) in Port Isabel.

The event includes hands-on activities including sugar skull decorating and altar making, vendors with a variety of food and wares, costume contests, dancing and music. No admission charge to the event.

The Port Isabel Lighthouse, Historical Museum and Treasures of the Gulf Museum (where the altars will be on display) will be open from 10am-4pm on Saturday, October 29th. Special event admission: $1 for each site.

Altar Display—

The Treasures of the Gulf Museum (308 E. Queen Isabella Blvd.) will be exhibiting altars made by the Laguna Madre area residents. A special admission fee of $1.00 applies from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 29. Altars will remain on display through November 15.

Captain Bell is the Customs Administrator of the Custom Duty House on St. James Island off Point Isabel in 1857.
This exciting drama includes the Texas Rangers, the local town beauty, Queen Isabella (suffering memory loss due to amnesia), a princess stowaway (from Spain that lands on Brazos Island) and a dashing Capt. Bell, the hero.
Lots of wheeling and dealing and tricks! Justice prevails in the end! Honesty pays! And the truth triumphs!
The Museums of Port Isabel and the Laguna Madre Museum Foundation are proud to present its “Telling Our Stories” Series of 2016 on Thursday, October 27th, at the Treasures of the Gulf Museum, 308 Queen Isabella Blvd. at 7pm.
